Armadillo was a town in Guadalupe County, New Mexico. It emerged as a boomtown of the American West, with mostly wooden buildings constructed quickly by settlers heading into the West to seek their fortunes. By 1898, a cholera outbreak devastated the once prosperous town, forcing many businesses to close their doors and forcing most of the townspeople to flee. Another wave devastated the town in 1907, but, by 1911, the town had recovered due to the end of the pandemic and the arrival of the railroad, which drew most of Tumbleweed's former inhabitants to settle in Armadillo. However, the town most all of its former prosperity and became a den of criminals, and Walton's Gang became a powerful threat in the area. With the help of former outlaw John Marston, US Marshal Leigh Johnson managed to stamp out gang activity in Armadillo, although the town was still infamous for its frequent street brawls and shootings by 1914.
