Arlington is a census-designated place in the coterminous Arlington County, Virginia. The county was founded on 27 February 1801, and it was named for the family residence established by the Earl of Arlington, Arlington House. The county is treated as the second-largest principal city of the Washington DC metropolitan area, as it is located directly across the Potomac River from the US capital. It is home to the Pentagon, Reagan National Airport, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Antonin Scalia Law School of George Mason University. In 2017, Arlington had a population of 234,965 people.
