Arkansas is a state of the United States located in the American South. Arkansas is known as "the Natural State" for being divided between the Ozarks and forests, with the cities of Arkansas being scattered across the state. On 15 June 1836, Arkansas was admitted to the union as the 25th state after being purchased from France in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, and the state capital was Little Rock. The state's reliance on slavery and plantations led to slow economic growth after the end of the American Civil War, and the state is still a mostly-rural region. In 2015, Arkansas had a population of 2,978,204 people.
