Ariarathes I of Cappadocia (died 322 BC) was the ruler of Cappadocia from 350 BC to 322 BC, succeeding Ariamnes and preceding Ariarathes II of Cappadocia.
Biography[]
Ariarathes was the son of the Cappadocian satrap Ariamnes, and he devotedly supported the Persian Empire. In 350 BC, he assisted Artaxerxes III of Persia in conquering Egypt, and he sided with Darius III of Persia during the war against Alexander the Great's invading Macedonian armies. Ariarathes was satrap until 331 BC, when he proclaimed himself King of Cappadocia. In 323 BC, Ariarathes refused to accept Perdiccas' appointment of Eumenes as governor of Cappadocia, and Perdiccas captured Ariarathes and had him crucified alongside many of his family members.
