Aria was an Achaemenid satrapy centered on the city of Herat in western Afghanistan. Aria, which had been created as a satrapy in 530 BC, was conquered by the Macedonian king Alexander the Great in 330 BC, and Alexander built the new capital of Alexandria Ariana (now Herat), replacing Artacoana. Aria was a part of the Seleucid empire from 323 BC to 167 BC, when it was conquered by Parthia, and it was conquered by the Kushan Empire in the late 2nd century AD and then by the Sassanid Persians in 230, after which it became known as Harev.
