Argos

Argos is a city in Greece that formerly existed as a city-state. Due to its location on a fertile plain, it became one of the first Mycenaean settlements, and the 7th century BC ruler Pheidon oversaw Argive expansion. It was a neutral and ineffective ally of Athens during the 5th century BC struggles between Athens and Sparta, and it was a democracy for most of the classical period, with only a brief hiatus between 418 and 416 BC. In 146 BC, Argos was conquered by Rome after the fall of the Achaean League, and Argos remained a continuously inhabited settlement for thousands of years. In 2011, Argos had a population of 22,209 people.
