
Areus I (died 265 BC) was King of Sparta from 309 to 265 BC, succeeding Cleomenes II and preceding Acrotatus II.
Biography[]
Areus was the grandson of Cleomenes II, and he succeeded his grandfather as King of Sparta in 309 BC. In 272 BC, he successfully repelled Pyrrhus of Epirus from Laconia, defeating his siege of Sparta. He also formed an unlikely alliance with the Athenian leader Chremonides against Antigonus II Gonatas, ruler of Macedon, and he died in battle with the Macedonians outside of Corinth in 265 BC.
