Area 51 is a highly classified US Air Force facility near Groom Lake in Lincoln County, Nevada. The airfield began service in 1942, and the Groom Lake test facility was established in 1955 by the CIA for the development of the U-2 reconnaissance aircraft. On 25 June 2013, after years of classification, the US government officially acknowledged the existence of Area 51, which had, by then, become a popular topic in conspiracy theories (including alien contact theories, with some arguing that UFOs were kept there).
