Archibald Roane

Archibald Roane (1759-18 January 1819) was the Democratic-Republican Governor of Tennessee from 23 September 1801 to 23 September 1803, interrupting John Sevier's terms.

Biography[]

Archibald Roane was born in Derry Township, Pennsylvania in 1759 to a Scottish father and an Ulster Scots mother. He served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, including at the Battle of Trenton and the Siege of Yorktown, and he went on to become a teacher in Lexington, Virginia. Roane moved to Jonesborough, Tennessee in 1788 and became a lawyer, and he became a district attorney, a judge, and finally as Governor from 1801 to 1803. He banned dueling, enacted anti-fraud measures, prohibited the disturbance of public worship, and elected Andrew Jackson as commander of the state militia, motivating Jackson's opponent John Sevier to challenge and defeat Roane for re-election. Roane returned to his judgeship and died in 1819.
