Appomattox Court House National Park

The Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is a 1,774-acre preserved 19th-century village in Appomattox County, Virginia. The park includes the antebellum "Clover Hill" village, which includes Appomattox Court House, the McLean House, the Clover Hill Tavern, the Meeks Store, the Appomattox County Jail, the Isbell House, the Mariah Wright House, the Kelley House, and the Peers House. In 1854, the construction of the railroad past Appomattox Depot led to most local businesses relocating to the site of modern Appomattox, and the Richmond-Lynchburg Stage Road was soon discontinued, leading to the Court House's decline. In 1930, the War Department acquired the land around the court house, transferring it to the National Park Service in 1933 and resulting in the park's creation in 1954. In 1966, the park was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
