
José Antonio Vigil Manrique de Lara (1782-30 September 1872) was a Peruvian Royalist general who served as Governor of Tarija from 1818 to 1820 and of Charcas and Chuquisaca from 1824 to 1825.
Biography[]
José Antonio Vigil Manrique de Lara was born in Chota, Viceroyalty of Peru in 1782, and he remained loyal to the Spanish crown during the Peruvian War of Independence. Vigil rose to the rank of general in the Royal Army and fought at the Battle of Cotagaita and the Battle of Suipacha in 1810, the Battle of Huaqui in 1811, and the Battle of Vilcapugio and the Battle of Ayohuma in 1813. In 1816, he became colonel of the Cazadores Regiment, and he served as Governor of Tarija from 1818 to 1820 and of Charcas and Chuquisaca from 1824 to 1825. He wa sthe last Royalist ruler of Charcas until the Battle of Ayacucho, after which he surrendered. Vigil went on to serve in the Peruvian Army, and he fought at the Battle of Socabaya in 1836. He became the supreme chief pf the Republic of North Peru before fighting for Jose Rufino Echenique's government at the Battle of La Palma. In 1857, he participated in the rebel attack on Callao during the Peruvian Civil War of 1856–1858. He died of pneumonia in 1872.
