Antonio Ricardos (1727-13 March 1794) was a general of Spain during the French Revolutionary Wars.
Biography[]
Antonio Ricardos was born in Barbastro, Spain in 1727, and he served in the Spanish Army in Italy during the War of the Austrian Succession in the 1740s. He became a general after serving in the war against Portugal during the Seven Years' War, and he established the Ocana Military College and the Royal Economc Society of Madrid. King Carlos IV of Spain promoted him to Captain-General during the French Revolutionary Wars, and he defeated the inexperienced French Revolutionary Army several times in southern France. However, he died in Madrid of pneumonia on 13 March 1794 while asking for reinforcements to continue his invasion of France. After Ricardos' death, the Spanish war effort began to suffer.
