Antonio Onofri was a Christian Democracy politician.
Biography[]
Antonio Onofri was a member of the Chamber of Deputies for Christian Democracy, and he was known to be a devout Catholic and a family man. He was involved with corruption, however; he sent his family on vacation to the mountains so that they could escape from the urban atmosphere of Rome, and his son carried a backpack full of lire into Switzerland so that it could be laundered. In 1992, Onofri betrayed fellow DC deputy Gaetano Nobile, who was arrested and threatened with the possibility of being imprisoned for his role in the Tangentopoli scandal, but Nobile used his police ally Luca Pastore to blackmail Onofri. Pastore took Onofri's son's backpack to Onofri as he prayed at a church, and told him that Onofri would go to prison unless he recanted his allegations against Nobile.
