Biography[]
Antonio Halili was born in Manila, Philippines in 1946, and he worked as a businessman before becoming the Mayor of Tanauan in southern Luzon in 2013. He rose to prominence during Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs, and, in 2014, he started a contentious policy of forcing imprisoned drug traffickers to perform a "walk of shame", being nicknamed "the Duterte of Batangas" due to his strong anti-drug stance. In October 2017, he was stripped of his authority over the police in response to his harsh measures. He was also ironically placed on Duterte's list of people with narco ties, although Halili was actively opposed to drug dealers and their activities. On 2 July 2018, at a flag-raising ceremony in Tanauan, Halili was shot once in the chest by a sniper, and he later died at a hospital.
