Antonio Grimani (28 December 1434-7 May 1523) was Doge of the Republic of Venice from 1521 to 1523, succeeding Leonardo Loredan and preceding Andrea Gritti.
Biography[]
Antonio Grimani was born to a poor family of the Republic of Venice, and in 1494 he became a captain in the Venetian Navy at the age of 60. On 19 August 1499, during the Second Ottoman-Venetian War, he lost the Battle of Sapienza and six days later lost the Battle of Zonchio. He risked the death penalty for his defeats, but he was exiled to Cherso and in 1509 he traveled to Rome. His sons let him return to Venice, and in 1521 he was elected as Doge at the age of 87. Grimani allied with Francis I of France but Venice lost the Battle of Bicocca, and in 1523 he died at the age of 89. He was succeeded by Andrea Gritti, left alone to fight the Holy Roman Empire.
