Antoine of Navarre (22 April 1518-17 November 1562) was King of Navarre from 25 May 1555 to 17 November 1562, succeeding Henry II of Navarre and preceding Jeanne d'Albret.
Biography[]
Antoine de Bourbon was born in La Fere, Picardy, France on 22 April 1518, the second son of Charles de Bourbon, Duke of Vendome, and the older brother of Louis I of Bourbon, Prince de Conde. On 20 October 1548, he was married to Jeanne d'Albret, and he became King of Navarre in 1555. He changed religions several times, switching between Protestantism and Catholicism. While Louis and Jeanne were Calvinists, Antoine remained loyal to the Catholic French monarchy during the French Wars of Religion, and King Charles IX of France named him Lieutenant-General of France in 1561. In 1562, he threatened to send his wife to a convent after she let the Huguenots sack Vendome, and she instead fled to Bearn. On 13 November 1562, Antoine was mortally wounded while besieging Rouen, and he died of his wounds four days later.
