Antoine Nompar de Caumont, Duc de Lauzun (1632-19 November 1723) was a general of the Kingdom of France.
Biography[]
The Duc de Lauzun entered the French Army and served under the Vicomte de Turenne before rising to command the royal regiment of dragoons after falling into Louis XIV of France's favor. He occasionally clashed with the king due to his jealousy and violence, and he even served time in the Bastille. In 1685, he moved to England to seek his fortune under King James II of England, gaining great influence at the English court. In 1689, he was given command of an expedition at Brest that was sent to Ireland to assist James during his war with Prince William of Orange, and the inexperienced Lauzun blindly followed Richard Talbot, leading to his defeat at the Battle of the Boyne. His failure destroyed any chance that he had of returning to Louis XIV's favor, and he died in 1723.
