Antietam National Cemetery

Antietam National Cemetery is a national cemetery located within the Antietam National Battlefield near Sharpsburg, Maryland. The cemetery was commissioned on the end of the American Civil War in 1865, and the Union dead from the battle - who were initially buried where they lay - were reinterred in 1867, while the Confederate dead were reinterred in separate cemeteries at Hagerstown, Shepherdstown, and Frederick. Only 40% of the Union dead were identified; among the graves are also those of soldiers killed in the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. The cemetery was acquired by the War Department in 1870 and by the National Park Service in 1933.
