
Anthony Colby (13 November 1792-20 July 1873) was the Whig Governor of New Hampshire from 4 June 1846 to 3 June 1847, succeeding John Hardy Steele and preceding Jared W. Williams.
Biography[]
Anthony Colby was born in New London, New Hampshire in 1792, and he owned and operated a stagecoach line, gristmill, and factory for producing scythes. He served in the state militia during the War of 1812 and rose to the rank of major-general in 1837, and he served in the State House from 1828 to 1832 and from 1837 to 1839 and as Governor from 1846 to 1847. He returned to the State House from 1860 to 1861, as Adjutant General of the New Hampshire Militia from 1861 to 1863 during the American Civil War, and as a trustee of Dartmouth College from 1850 to 1870. He died in 1873.
