
Anthony Berry and his wife
Anthony Berry (12 February 1925 – 12 October 1984) was the Member of Parliament from Enfield Southgate from 15 October 1964 to 12 October 1984, succeeding Beverley Baxter and preceding Michael Portillo. He was killed in the Brighton hotel bombing of 1984.
Biography[]
Anthony Berry was born on 12 February 1925 in Eton, Berkshire, England, the youngest son of a newspaper magnate. In 1962, he became the High Sheriff of Glamorgan, and in 1964 he became the UK Conservative Party member of parliament from Enfield Southgate. On 12 October 1984, he stayed at the Grand Hotel in Brighton with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and other Conservative Party leaders, and he was killed in the Brighton hotel bombing by the Provisional IRA; his wife was non-lethally injured. A by-election was held after his death, and Conservative Michael Portillo became the new MP.
