The Antemoro are an ethnic group of Madagascar living on the southeastern coast, between Manakara and Farafangana. Their name means "people of the coast" in Malagasy, and they were partly descended from the Somali Dir clan, which settled on the island in the 14th century and intermarried with the local population. The largely-Hindu Antemoro established a kingdom during the 16th century, supplanting the power of the Zafiraminia. The Antemoro became known as powerful sorcerers and astrologers, and they helped forge a common Malagasy identity through the creation of a network of powerful spiritual advisors. The kingdom was brought down by an uprising of the commoners against the noble class in the late 19th century, and 500,000 Antemoro still live in Madagascar.
