Anson George McCook (10 October 1835-30 December 1917) was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-NY 8) from 4 March 1877 to 3 March 1883, succeeding Elijah Ward and preceding John J. Adams.
Biography[]
Anson George McCook was born in Steubenville, Ohio in 1835, the brother of Edward M. McCook, Henry C. McCook, Roderick McCook, and John James McCook, the cousin of Daniel McCook, and the cousin of George Wythe McCook, Robert Latimer McCook, Alexander McDowell McCook, Daniel McCook Jr., Edwin Stanton McCook, and John James McCook; the family was collectively known as the "Fighting McCooks". He was raised in California, mining in California and Nevada before returning to Ohio and serving in the 2nd Ohio Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. He rose to the rank of colonel, commanding the regiment in Kentucky and Georgia before becoming a brigadier-general during the Atlanta campaign; he later commanded the 194th Ohio Infantry Regiment during the Valley campaigns of 1864. After the war, he became a lawyer and tax assessor before moving to New York City in 1873. He worked as a publisher and served in the US House of Representatives from 1877 to 1883, and he later served as Secretary of the US Senate from 1883 to 1893. He died in 1917.
