Anson Caldwell (1 November 1788-2 July 1853) was an American politician from Mississippi.
Biography[]
Anson Caldwell was born in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania in 1788. He was raised in Cambridge, Ohio before migrating south to Richmond, Kentucky in 1815, inspired by America's victory in the War of 1812 to start a new life on the pacified frontier. Caldwell tried his hand at farming in Kentucky, amassing a small fortune at his Brotherton plantation. In 1836, he sold his landholdings in Kentucky to move farther south to Grenada, Mississippi to open a cotton plantation, "Newstead". Caldwell, previously a National Republican, joined the Democrats in order to win election to the State House in 1840, representing planter interests in the Grenada Lake area. He failed to win re-election due to his lack of charisma or campaigning skills, and he retired to his plantation, where he died in 1853.
