Ansar al-Sunnah was a Sunni/Sufi Islamist militant group formed in September 2003 to fight against the United States' occupation of Iraq during the Iraq War. It had over 1,000 fighters during the war, based in northern and central Iraq. The group included both Sunni Arabs and Kurds and helped in fighting the US Army in Fallujah, Ramadi, Samarra, and Baqubah, and even after US offensives wrested control of Baqubah, Fallujah, and Samarra, the group continued as an underground resistance movement. The group split into subgroups in December 2007, and it continued its struggle against the USA and Iraqi government.
