Annesburg

Annesburg was a Mississippi River coal mining town located in Mississippi County, Arkansas. Annesburg was founded by German settlers who discovered the rich coal seams in the surrounding hills, and the surrounding countryside and waterways became sooty and polluted from the large-scale mining operations which began in the region during the early 19th century. The town's German-American history was made apparent by its German colonial architecture and its beer hall, as well as by its notable German-American community, which became smaller as more outsiders moved into the town to work in its hazardous mines. By the 1890s, most of the settlement's population were miners and their families, living in identical, grey wooden huts along the side of the hill. In 1899, the town was the site of a massive shootout between the Van der Linde Gang and the Pinkertons after Dutch van der Linde murdered the industrialist Leviticus Cornwall at the docks. The town flourished for years before closing down in the early 20th century.
