Anne Burras (1595-16??) was an English settler in Virginia and the first Englishwoman to marry in the New World. She arrived in Jamestown on 1 October 1608 and worked as a lady-in-waiting to Mistress Forrest before marrying the 28-year-old carpenter John Laydon. She was brutally whipped for sewing shirts too short, causing her to miscarry, but she gave birth to the first Jamestown-born child, Virginia Laydon, in 1624. The family lived in Henrico and later Elizabeth City, and she died after 1625.
