Anna Surratt

Elizabeth Susanna "Anna" Surratt Tonry (1 January 1843-24 October 1904) was the daughter of Mary Surratt. Born in Maryland in 1843, the second child of Mary and her husband John, she and her brother John Surratt helped run the family's farmland and businesses during the American Civil War. After the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the arrest of her mother, Anna was found by Union soldiers to have kept a shrine of John Wilkes Booth, and she testified that she had never overheard any discussions of disloyal activities and that John Wilkes Booth's visits to the house were always short. She pled for her mother's life until her execution, and she later married William P. Tonry and died in Baltimore in 1904.
