
Anibal Pinto (15 March 1825-9 June 1884) was President of Chile from 18 September 1876 to 18 September 1881, succeeding Federico Errazuriz Zanartu and preceding Domingo Santa Maria. He was a member of the Liberal Party of Chile.
Biography[]
Anibal Pinto Garmendia was born in Santiago, Chile on 15 March 1825, the son of President Francisco Antonio Pinto. He served on the Chilean legation to the Papal States from 1848 to 1850, and he went on to become a Liberal Party of Chile deputy and senator. In 1871, he became Minister of War and Navy under President Federico Errazuriz Zanartu, and he succeeded Errazuriz as President in 1876. He declared the non-convertability of the Chilean peso in 1877, named Vina del Mar as a commune in 1878, achieved Argentine neutrality at the start of the War of the Pacific with Bolivia and Peru, and captured Antofagasta and Tarapaca. He died in 1884.
