Angus the Young

Angus Og MacDonald (1280-1330) was Lord of Islay from 1299 to 1330, succeeding Alasdair Og of Islay and preceding John of Islay. He was a powerful magnate of Scotland during the early 14th century, and he served as a lieutenant of Robert Bruce.

Biography[]

Angus Og MacDonald was a younger son of Aonghus Mor and the brother of Alasdair Og of Islay, and he supported King Edward I of England against King John Balliol; in 1299, he inherited the Lordship of Islay from his brother after his death in battle with the MacDougall clan. In 1306, he joined forces with Robert Bruce, betraying the English in order to get his revenge against the pro-English MacDougalls. He helped Bruce escape to Islay following the Battle of Methven, and he later fought at the 1314 Battle of Bannockburn, after which he and his family were awarded several confiscated lands. He died of natural causes in 1330.
