The Anglo-Irish are a social group in Ireland, descended from the dissenting Protestant English, Scottish, and Huguenots that settled in Ireland during the early 17th century and onwards. Descended from the Protestant ruling class of Ireland, the Anglo-Irish can refer to Irish members of the Church of Ireland, Irish people of English descent, or of mixed English and Irish or Welsh descent. Famous Anglo-Irish people are William Johnson, Edmund Burke, Arthur Wellesley, Edward Pakenham, Jonathan Swift, Frederick Roberts, Oscar Wilde, and C.S. Lewis.
