Biography[]
Angel Calderon de la Barca y Belgrano was born in Buenos Aires, Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata in 1790, and he came from a noble family. Calderon became a Spanish diplomat, first arriving in Washington DC in 1822; he would come to be Spain's frequent envoy to the United States. Calderon chose posting in America over Rome due to his initial interest in American politics, but he became disenchanted with the USA and republicanism after witnessing the corruption in the country (such as extremely high salaries for congressmen).
