Andy MacDonald (1909 - 29 March 1944) was a British Flight Lieutenant of the Royal Air Force and prisoner at Stalag Luft III.
Biography[]
MacDonald was born in 1909 in Scotland. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1929. In 1942, he was captured by the Germans and sent to Stalag Luft III. He was Roger Bushell's second-in-command in planning the great escape in 1944. He was captured when a Gestapo agent whished him Good Luck and he answered Thank You in English.
On March 29, under the pretext of being driven back to a prison camp, the car carrying Bushell and MacDonald stopped for a rest break at the side of the autobahn near Ramstein, Germany (just outside today's Ramstein Air Base). It was during this stop that they were murdered by members of the Gestapo, including Emil Steinach, helped by others.
