Andrew J

Andrew Jackson Thayer (27 November 1818 – 28 April 1873) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-OR) from 4 March to 30 July 1861, succeeding Lansing Stout and preceding George K. Shiel.

Biography[]

Andrew Jackson Thayer was born in Lima, New York in 1818, the brother of William W. Thayer. He became a local lawyer before setting out for Oregon in 1853 and settling on a farm near Corvallis, where he farmed and continued his legal practice. He briefly served as US Attorney for the District of Oregon for six months in 1859 before resigning, as he wished to defend rather than prosecute. He went on to serve in the US House of Representatives for four months in 1861, but he resigned when George K. Shiel contested the election due to an unconstitutional change in the election date. He went on to serve as an Associate Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court from 1870 until his death in 1873.
