Andrew Humphreys

Andrew Humphreys (30 March 1821-14 June 1904) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-IN 2) from 5 December 1876 to 3 March 1877, succeeding James D. Williams and preceding Thomas R. Cobb.

Biography[]

Andrew Humphreys was born in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1821, and his family settled in Owen County, Indiana in 1829 and then to Manhattan, Indiana. He settled in Bloomfield, Greene County in 1842, and he served in the State House from 1849 to 1852 and in 1857, and criticized Indiana's Republican governor Oliver P. Morton throughout the American Civil War, leading to his conviction for treason in 1864; he was sentenced to three weeks' hard labor. After the war, Humphreys served in the US House of Representatives from 1876 to 1877 and in the State Senate from 1874 to 1876, 1878 to 1882, and 1896 to 1900.
