
Andrew Hickenlooper (10 August 1837 – 12 May 1904) was Lieutenant Governor of Ohio (R) from 12 January 1880 to 9 January 1882, succeeding Jabez W. Fitch and preceding Rees G. Richards. He was the great-grandfather of Colorado governor John Hickenlooper.
Biography[]
Andrew Hickenlooper was born in Hudson, Ohio in 1837, and he served as the city surveyor of Cincinnati before recruiting an artillery battery for the US Army at the start of the American Civil War. Following the Battle of Shiloh in 1862, he became a divisional artillery commander, and he served as an engineer during the campaigns in Georgia and the Carolinas. On 13 March 1865, he was made a brevet Brigadier-General, and his appointment was confirmed by President Andrew Johnson on 12 March 1866. After the war, he became a US marshal for the southern district of Ohio. In 1879, he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Ohio under Governor Charles Foster, and he served until 1882. Hickenlooper died in 1904.
