Andrew Ericson Lee (18 March 1847-19 March 1934) was the Populist Governor of South Dakota from 1 January 1897 to 8 January 1901, succeeding Charles H. Sheldon and preceding Charles N. Herreid.

Biography[]

Andrew Ericson Lee was born in Bergen, Norway in 1847, and he and his family emigrated to the United States while he was young. He was raised on a farm in Dane County, Wisconsin before moving to Vermillion, Dakota Territory in 1867. He became a merchant before running for Governor of South Dakota in 1896, and he served as Governor from 1897 to 1901, the only non-Republican Governor until 1926. In 1908, he was unsuccessful in his Democratic gubernatorial bid, and he died in 1934.
