Biography[]
Andres Dorantes de Carranza was born in Bejar del Castanar, Spain in 1500, and he was raised in a poor hidalgo family. He traveled to the Americas to enrich himself under Captain Panfilo de Narvaez, and they traveled to Florida in 1527. Several hurricanes and fights with the Native American locals reduced the group of 300 Spaniards to just 4 survivors, including Dorantes, Estevanico, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, and Alonso del Castillo Maldonado. The four of them took eight years to return to Mexico City from Texas, and he died in New Spain in 1550.
