Andreas Clemens

Andreas Clemens (1860-) was a German immigrant gold miner who lived in Louisiana during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Biography[]

Andreas Clemens was born in the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1860 to a German Catholic family, and he married Louisa and fathered Christina and Marcus Clemens. His family emigrated to the United States, settling in Louisiana and becoming involved in the gold mining business in the Rhodes area. In 1899, he was taken hostage by a gang of outlaws who demanded a ransom payment in gold bars. His wife told the outlaws Arthur Morgan and Charles Smith of her husband's capture, and they found Clemens tied up at a clearing which came to be named Clemens Point. Clemens warned them that they had walked into a trap, but Morgan and Smith killed all of the outlaws and returned Clemens to his family. Morgan was hostile to the Germans, who did not speak much English, shooing them away after their reunion. However, Andreas - grateful for Marston's help - gave him a gold bar as a reward for his help.
