
Andre Bienvenue Roman (5 March 1795-26 January 1866) was the Whig Governor of Louisiana from 31 January 1831 to 4 February 1835 (succeeding Jacques Dupre and preceding Edward Douglass White Sr.) and from 4 February 1839 to 30 January 1843 (succeeding White and preceding Alexandre Mouton).
Biography[]
Andre Bienvenue Roman was born in Opelousas, Louisiana in 1795, and he came from a family of sugar planters. He served as a state legislator from 1818 to 1826, as a parish judge, and as Governor from 1831 to 1835 and from 1839 to 1843, supporting internal improvements, the creation of the state penitentiary system, public education, and the draining of the swamps around New Orleans. He opposed secession on the eve of the American Civil War and lost his wealth as a result of the conflict, and he died in New Orleans in 1866.
