Anderlecht is a municipality of the Brussels Capital Region of Belgium. It was the site of a Roman-era villa and a Frankish necropolis before coming to be home to two feudal manors by the 12th century. In 1356, Count Louis II of Flanders defeated his sister-in-law Joanna of Brabant at Scheut near Anderlecht, briefly usurping Brabant from her before losing it a year later. In 1393, Joanna made Anderlecht a part of Brussels, and Desiderius Erasmus lived in Anderlecht in 1521. In 1792, the French routed the Austrians at Anderlecht shortly after the Battle of Jemappes during the French Revolutionary Wars, and the French made Anderlecht an independent municipality of Brussels. During the 19th century, Anderlecht and Brussels experienced rapid population growth, and new garden cities were built to house the influx of newcomers. By 2018, Anderlecht had a population of 118,382 people.
