Ancaster is a village in Lincolnshire, England. Following the Roman conquest of Britain, the Romans built a town on the site of a Corieltauvi settlement called Causennis, located along Ermine Street, the northbound Roman road from London. The Romans built a large stone wall and ditches to defend the town against marauding Saxons, but, during Sub-Roman Britain, the invading Anglo-Saxons conquered the town and renamed it Anecastre, meaning "the Roman fort of Anna". In 875, it was the site of the Battle of Ancaster, fought between Ealdorman Hunwald of Lincolnshire and the rebellious Bishop Herefrith of Lincoln. In 2001, Ancaster had a population of 1,317 people.
