Anatoly Lukyanov (7 May 1930-9 January 2019) was Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union from 15 March 1990 to 22 August 1991, succeeding Mikhail Gorbachev.
Biography[]
Anatoly Lukyanov was born in Smolensk, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union in 1930, and he befriended Mikhail Gorbachev during his law school years. From 1975 to 1977, he helped to draft the new Soviet constitution, and he served as Chief of the Secretariat of the Supreme Soviet from 1977 to 1983, as a Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee from 1987, and a member of the Politburo from 1988. From 1990 to 1991, he served as the first Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, and he was a leading force behind the August Coup in 1991. In 1993, 1995, and 1995, he was elected to the State Duma as a CPRF member, but he did not participate in the 2003 elections. He died in Moscow in 2019 at the age of 88.
