
Anatoly Fyodorovich Dobrynin (16 November 1919-6 April 2010) was the Soviet Ambassador to the United States from 4 January 1962 to 19 May 1986, succeeding Mikhail Menshikov and preceding Yuri Dubinin.
Biography[]
Anatoly Dobrynin was born near Mozhaisk, Moscow Oblast, Soviet Union in 1919, and he joined the Soviet diplomatic service in 1946. He served as deputy secretary general at the United Nations in 1957 and served as Ambassador to the United States from 1962 to 1986, presiding over the USSR's negotiations with America during the Cuban Missile Crisis. At the same time, he served on the CPSU Central Committee as a candidate member from 1966 to 1971 and as a full member from 1971 to 1990, on the Secretariat from 1986 to 1988, and as Head of the International Department of the Central Committee from 1986 to 1988. During his tenure, he befriended Henry Kissinger, and the two exchanged gifts, shared jokes, and met each other's parents. He died in Moscow in 2010.
