Anastasia Orsoleo

Anastasia Orsoleo (753-) was the wife of Pietro Orsoleo.

Biography[]

Anastasia was born in 753 to a lowborn family of Catholic Italians, and she married Pietro Orsoleo, becoming a member of the House of Orsoleo of the Republic of Venice. Her husband was the Marshal of Venice and the heir to the Orsoleo family, so she had influence in the family; in 770 the House of Galbaio recruited her in the plot to kill her father-in-law Doge Teodato of Venice. She tried to poison his wine, but on 8 November 770 Teodato discovered the Galbaio family's complicity after he did not drink the wine.

On 9 April 773, Anastasia supplanted her allies when she began a plot to assassinate Leone Galbaio. Doge Giovanni of Venice ordered for her to be arrested, but she escaped to the court of Count Euphemio of Arborea, and Leone was later killed by assassins.
