Amyclae

Amyclae was a city of ancient Laconia, Greece, situated 2 miles south of Sparta. It was founded by the Spartan king Amyclas, and it maintained its independence as an Achaean town long after the conquest of the Peloponnese by the Dorians, as the Amyclaean leader Philonomus had betrayed the Spartans over to the Dorians. Shortly before the First Messenian War in 743 BC, the Spartan king Teleclus conquered Amyclae.
