Amun was a major Egyptian deity who was often compared with Zeus, the head of the Greek pantheon of gods. Amun became the patron god of Thebes during the 1900s BC, with Senusret I building the Precinct of Amun-Re. After the rebellion of Thebes against the Hyksos, Amun was often fused with the sun god Ra as Amun-Ra, and he acquired national importance. Amun became chief deity of the empire, and he also came to be worshipped in Libya and Nubia.
