Amjad Bashir

Amjad Bashir (born 17 September 1952) was a British MEP for the Yorkshire and the Humber region from 1 July 2014, succeeding Edward McMillan-Scott. In 2015, he defected from UKIP to the UK Conservative Party.

Biography[]

Amjad Bashir was born in Pakistan in 1952, and his family moved to Yorkshire, England in 1960; his father worked at a mill in Bradford. Bashir studied chemical engineering at the University of Bradford before becoming a restauranteur, and he ran two establishments in Bradford and Manchester. From 1997 to 2012, he was a member of the UK Conservative Party, and he decided to switch to the Eurosceptic UK Independence Party in 2012. He was elected as one of six MEPs for Yorkshire and the Humber region in 2014, but he defected to the Tories a year later, with UKIP claiming that it was due to financial irregularities.
