Americus V

Americus Vespucius Rice (18 November 1835-4 April 1904) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-OH 5) from 4 March 1875 to 3 March 1879, succeeding Charles N. Lamison and preceding Benjamin Le Fevre.

Biography[]

Americus Vespucius Rice was born in Perrsyville, Ohio in 1835, and he studied law before serving as a captain in the 21st Ohio Infantry Regiment, as colonel of the 57th Ohio Infantry Regiment, and as a brevet brigadier-general during the American Civil War, losing his right leg at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in 1864. After the war, he became a private banker in Ottawa, Ohio and served in the US House of Representatives from 1875 to 1879. Afterwards, he became a bank president and pension agent, and he moved to Washington DC in 1899 to work as a purchasing agent for the Census Bureau until his death.
