The American Independent Party (AIP) is a paleoconservative political party in the United States, founded on 8 July 1967 by several Southern Democrats as a pro-segregation party. The party nominated George Wallace as its presidential candidate in the 1968 presidential elections, with Curtis LeMay serving as the vice-presidential nominee; due to its segregationist stance, the AIP won Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Georgia, therefore winning 46 electoral votes and 13.5% of the popular vote. In 1976, the party underwent divisions, and the AIP was a part of the American Constitution Party from 1992 until leaving it in 2008. In 2016, the party supported Donald Trump and Mike Pence, the US Republican Party's presidential and vice-presidential nominees.
