Amer Ghalib

Amer Ghalib (1979-) was the Democratic Mayor of Hamtramck, Michigan from 3 November 2021, succeeding Karen Majewski. A Yemeni immigrant and a healthcare practitioner, he and the all-male, all-Muslim city council banned the display of LGBT Pride flags in June 2023 (LGBT Pride Month). He also banned the city from investing in Israeli companies or companies doing business in Israel. During the 2024 Democratic presidential primary, Ghalib supported the Uncommitted National Movement and endorsed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump due to their shared social conservatism; he joined Trump on some of his presidential campaign rallies. In March 2025, Trump nominated Ghalib as Ambassador to Kuwait.
